Smart Gas Meter Data Security and Encryption Technologies

1. Core Data That Must Be Protected

Gas meter security primarily involves three categories of data:

Metering and identity data, such as gas usage, meter number, and user information.

Critical operational data, such as recharge commands and valve control commands.

Authentication credentials, such as keys and certificates.

If this data is tampered with or leaked, it could lead to billing disputes, unauthorized recharges, or even safety incidents.

2. Main Encryption Technologies

2.1 Hardware Security Chips

Dedicated security chips, such as ESAM and secure MCUs, are embedded in gas meter terminals to store keys and perform cryptographic operations. Keys never leave the chip, which effectively prevents physical extraction and side-channel attacks.

2.2 Symmetric Encryption

Algorithms such as AES-128 and SM4 are used to encrypt communication messages, ensuring data confidentiality during transmission. Symmetric encryption is fast and suitable for resource-constrained terminal devices such as gas meters.

2.3 Asymmetric Encryption and Digital Signatures

Algorithms such as RSA, ECC, and SM2 are used for identity authentication and digital signatures. The gas meter and the platform perform mutual authentication using certificates or key pairs, preventing counterfeit devices from accessing the network or counterfeit commands from being issued.

2.4 Integrity Verification

Hash algorithms such as SHA-256 and SM3 are used to generate message digests or message authentication codes (MACs). The receiver verifies whether the digest is consistent, ensuring that the data has not been tampered with during transmission.

3. Typical Security Mechanisms

In actual deployments, end-to-end encryption is commonly used: data is encrypted and signed before it leaves the gas meter, and the platform decrypts and verifies it upon receipt. Intermediate network nodes cannot access the plaintext.

At the same time, dynamic key negotiation is employed so that each session uses a different temporary key, reducing the risk of key leakage. Some solutions also incorporate blockchain technology to record critical operations on-chain, enabling tamper-proof and trusted auditing.

4. Summary

The data security of smart communication gas meters relies on a multi-layer protection system: hardware protection + algorithmic encryption + authentication and verification.

With the promotion of Chinese national cryptographic algorithms (SM series) and the widespread adoption of security chips, gas meters are becoming more trustworthy and controllable in terms of data transmission and command execution in open network environments.
